A contractor quoting a mini-split installation in DeKalb County has to settle the sizing question before anything else, and the local weather record is one input into that answer. 57 severe weather events were recorded in DeKalb County, Tennessee between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an event rather than a constant, so the system's long-term performance will be decided by how well it was sized and how cleanly the lines and mounts were set, not by weathering a relentless outdoor load. A rushed or undersized install shows up faster when the equipment has little weather margin to hide behind.

Electrical service in houses of this vintage was sized for a different era of equipment, and a mini-split draws current on its own terms regardless of what the panel was originally built to handle. Half the homes in DeKalb County, Tennessee were built in 1986 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A licensed contractor assessing a mini-split installation here checks the existing service capacity before anything else, because an undersized panel or an outdated circuit run is what actually shapes the scope and the bill. The ductwork question falls away with a ductless system, but the electrical does not.

The Parts of a Mini-Split System Being Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway single-story house with three wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit on the ground outside.

The indoor air handler is the piece a homeowner sees most. It mounts high on an interior wall, pulls room air across its coil, and delivers conditioned air back into the space. The outdoor unit sits on a pad or bracket outside the house, housing the compressor and the components that do the heavy mechanical work.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small hole in the wall, carrying the refrigerant back and forth. A condensate drain line runs from the indoor unit to the outside, moving the moisture the air handler pulls from the air. The contractor also connects a dedicated electrical circuit at the outdoor unit.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how the system is configured for this house.
